Tara Winter is a Licensed Clinical Creative Arts Therapist, Registered Drama Therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher who provides mental health counseling and mindfulness coaching services for children, adolescents and adults. Tara earned her Master's degree in Drama Therapy from New York University.
Tara's most recent endeavor was working as a therapist at a residential school in Brewster, NY, counseling children and adolescents dealing with a full range of life stressors, such as trauma, spectrum disorders and severe learning disabilities. She currently has a private practice in Ridgefield, CT.
Previously, Tara worked at St. Vincent's Hospital in Harrison, NY for over four years on the inpatient units. She worked with individuals experiencing major depressive disorders, psychosis, severe anxiety, addiction and trauma.
Tara also worked in many New York City outpatient mental health clinics, two of which hired her after she had completed her Master's level internships at their facilities: F.E.G.S and Access Community Health Center. She worked with patients dealing with addiction, dual diagnosis disorders and SMHD (severe mental health disorders).
Psychotherapy
Tara has extensive experience working with clients who are dealing with anxiety, depression, life transitions and relationship issues. Her goal is to make her clients feel validated, supported and empowered. Each session will be geared towards a client's individual needs.
Drama Therapy
When Tara earned her Master’s degree in Drama Therapy at New York University, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, she received clinical training to use improvisation and theatre techniques to facilitate personal growth and health in treating individuals with a range of mental health, cognitive, and developmental disorders. In her therapy practice, Tara may integrate role-play, storytelling, psychodrama, and various other forms of expressive therapy. Drama Therapy can be useful in finding new ways to relieve internal and external conflict.
Tara received her B.F.A. in Acting from Emerson College in Boston and pursued theater in NYC before receiving her degree in Drama Therapy from New York University.
Yoga
Yoga can be an effective tool to integrate into therapy practice. Tara became a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) in 2005; she finds it useful to sometimes incorporate that training into her work. Whether it's a simple breathing exercise, a meditation technique, a basic stretch or holding a pose, yoga can help release tension and increase stability and flow in the body and mind. Tara uses evidence-based holistic guidance to help her clients successfully reach goals.
My therapeutic experience enables me to offer effective outpatient, individualized, psychological treatment. I have an authentic and friendly manner, and I welcome your expression of any range of emotions that you are feeling in the present moment during our session. I emphasize a flexible, client-centered approach to therapy. If you are struggling and in need of support, reach out to me for a free phone consultation to see if this would be a good fit for you.
